Land of friends
Today I was looking for expressions related to the terms home, roots, “patria”, etc. I thought about what I would call “patria”. And although I would, generally speaking, see the whole world (at least the minimally civilised parts of it) as my home, I have to confess, that Carinthia is my “patria”, my home.
I then searched for Carinthia/Kärnten on Wikipedia and discovered interesting etymological cognitions:
The name “Carinthia” has at least to possible stems. Both theoretical discussions focus on the word “Carinthia” being educed from a Celtical word. While the first theory sees “Karanto”, which stands for “rock” or “stone”, being related to the Austrian/Carinthian alps, the second theory is by far the more charming or at least symbolic and humanist approach.
The Celtic word “Carant” would translate into “friend” or “related”, which would give “Carinthia” the meaning of “land of friends”. You may read about it for Carinthia or Kärnten on Wikipedia.
Couldn’t this be a beautiful and marvellous grounding for a new definition of Carinthia’s Identity?
